Guidelines for Emission-free Construction Sites

24-09-2024

The concept of reducing and eventually eliminating carbon emissions from construction sites has gained significant momentum in recent years. This publication presents the most recent best practices in planning and realising emission reduction on the worksite.

Early decision making

Decisions made during initial planning, design and procurement have a great impact on energy use and waste generation during construction. In the actual construction phase, infrastructure and industry know-how is important to facilitate use of clean energy and increasing reuse and recycling of materials. Evaluation and measurements are necessary to manage emission reductions and to build industry competence.

Target audience

This report provides comprehensive guidelines for stakeholders who are aiming to reduce emissions from construction sites, primarily by applying the concept of emission-free construction. The target audience includes urban planners, designers, project owners, contractors, and all other stakeholders within the construction industry who have an influence on emissions from construction activities.

The key findings are that emission reductions are feasible at all stages of construction, with significant opportunities before construction even begins. Achieving emission-free construction requires a collaborative effort, with active participation from all stakeholders. While notable progress has been made in the Nordics, further efforts are essential to meet emission-reduction targets.
In addition to this document, four posters with key information are included in the appendix to further support the implementation of these guidelines.
